District 5 Quarterfinals preview

Here is my match-by-match look at Thursday's quarterfinals with probable lineups. Chestnut Ridge has a bye through to Saturday, as only seven teams qualified.

(7) HOPE for Hyndman at (2) Bedford
(Hyndman wrestlers listed first)
106 - Tanner Clites (So., 20-10) vs. Jonathan Gabriel (Fr., 24-1)
113 - Robby Snyder (So., 24-9) vs. Jake Warren (Jr. 17-9)
120 - No entry vs. Ryan Easter (Jr., 24-1)
126 - Chris Gibbner (Jr., 16-14) vs. Garrett Thomas (Jr., 23-2)
132 - No entry vs. Kenny Collins (So., 10-11)
138 - No entry vs. Toby Brett (Jr., 19-5)
145 - No entry vs. Ty Zimmerman (So., 2-7)
152 - Tyler Clites (Sr., 13-18) vs. Tanner Williams (Sr., 23-4) or  Niklas Wendt (Sr., 1-4)
160 - Richard Moskey (Sr., 27-7) vs. Caleb Grimes (Sr., 19-7)
170 - Oscar Miller (Jr., 16-11) vs. Cameron Sheeder (So., 0-5)
182 - No entry vs. Michael Brett (Sr., 18-6)
195 - Jake Bennett (Jr., 29-1) vs. Daryl Stiffler (Jr., 6-10)
220 - Dylan Emerick (Sr., 15-4) vs. Chance Williams (Jr., 15-9)
285 - No entry vs. Nate Shoemaker (So., 11-8)

Analysis: This is a tough go for the Hornets with so many likely forfeits, though word is that Emerick may wrestle despite a knee injury that he suffered early in the month. I would favor HOPE for Hyndman at 170 and 195. Most intriguing bout of the night is at 160, where I have Moskey and Grimes as the top two wrestlers in my coverage area.

Prediction: Bedford 58-15.

(6) Northern Bedford at (3) Meyersdale
(Northern Bedford wrestlers listed first, my best guess on Meyersdale records here as nothing I have found is complete online)
106 - Trey Childers (So., 10-12) vs. Trevor Thomas (Fr., 19-12)
113 - Brandon Defibaugh (Fr., 8-9) vs. Billy Charlton (Sr., 27-5)
120 - Jared Helsley (So., 12-11) vs. Brady McKenzie (So., 18-12)
126 - Judah Gochnour (So., 2-10) vs. Collin Day (Sr., 29-7)
132 - Mason Replogle (Sr., 18-5) vs. Tanner Hetrick (Jr., 25-9)
138 - Damian Corle (Sr., 18-7) vs. Hunter Lantz (Sr., 13-8)
145 - Drew Gartland (Sr., 22-0) vs. Seth Deist (Jr., 24-9)
152 - Ty Bechtel (So., 10-9) vs. David Stanton (Jr., 10-18)
160 - Lucas Kolinchak (Fr., 4-7) or Dylan Shipley (Jr., 4-8) vs. Billy Dunbar (Sr., 19-7)
170 - Duelin Douglas (Sr., 8-7) vs. Tim Hines (Sr., NA)
182 - Justin Brunner (Sr., 15-8) vs. Gavin Berkley (Jr., 33-2)
195 - Derick Eichelberger (Sr., 8-8) vs. No entry
220 - Eric Grace (Sr., 18-4) vs. No entry
285 - Chase Ott (So., 8-12) vs. No entry

Analysis: Of the three quarterfinals, this should be the most interesting one. Straight up, Meyersdale has strong edges at 113, 126, 160 and 182. Northern will benefit from forfeit wins if that happens in the three highest weights. The Black Panthers will likely need the senior trio of Replogle, Corle, and Gartland to come through with three wins and maybe a bonus point or two also. Replogle-Hetrick is a marquee matchup. Bouts at 120 and 152 could also be the key for either side.

Prediction: Northern Bedford, 33-32.

(5) North Star at (4) Berlin
(North Star wrestlers listed first)
106 - Lenny Beeman (Jr., 14-8) vs. Emil Kiesnowski (Fr., 8-18)
113 - James Shaffer (So., 6-6) vs. Tommy DeArmitt (Jr., 18-12)
120 - Tayte Mostoller (Sr., 22-12) vs. Joe Swank (Fr., 26-5)
126 - Colton Gennett (Jr., 3-11) vs. Anthony Collins (Jr., 21-8)
132 - Michael Baker (So., 3-10) vs. Chris Miller (Sr., 28-3)
138 - Tevin Mostoller (So., 24-6) vs. Braden Fochtman (Fr., 23-8)
145 - Luke Lepley (Jr., 10-12) vs. Eric Darr (Sr., 18-12)
152 - Corey Fritch (Jr., 19-10) vs. Blake Miller (Sr., 24-10)
160 - Austin Connor (So., 9-10) vs. Bryce Fochtman (So., 27-2)
170 - Thomas Miller (Jr., 9-14) vs. Trevor Moore (So., 12-15)
182 - Hunter Connor (So., 9-10) vs. Shane Pepper (So., 14-14)
195 - Kevin Horner (Jr., 14-11) vs. Stew Trulick (Jr., 26-5)
220 - Levi Albright (Jr., 22-8) vs. Mitchell Walker (Sr., 20-7)
285 - Brady Vinisky (So., 2-6) vs. Anthony Collins (Fr., 11-5)

Analysis: Berlin beat North Star, 55-13, on January 10. Hard not to see the Mountaineers picking up the win again here. That said, there should be some interesting bouts, with 138, 152 and 220 standing out. At 138, Mostoller owns a pair of decisions this season over Fochtman, and at 152, Fritch and Miller have split two encounters, while Albright has a 2-1 edge on Walker at 220 this year.

Prediction: Berlin, 49-17.

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

This date in local wrestling history...

A day late.

On January 28, 2006...
The county crowned four champions at the Thomas Tournament. Hyndman's Jake Snyder and Brent Willison captured back-to-back titles at 135 and 140 pounds, respectively, while Chestnut Ridge's Jordan Downey won the 152-pound crown and Bedford's Trevin Kensinger stood atop the podium at 160.
Chestnut Ridge was the highest local team finisher, placing second behind North Star, which had 12 placewinners that included five finalists.

Tuesday in print

In Tuesday's Bedford Gazette, I discuss the Thomas Tournament, the upcoming district duals, and give my take on why the state duals should remain the same. Also, I have the latest coverage area rankings (plenty of changes with wrestlers dropping weights), plus a list of the top 10 all-time winners in Bedford County, which Chestnut Ridge's Tyler Dibert is now a member of having broken the school record on Saturday.

Also, I have posted finals videos from Saturday's ending to the Thomas Tournament further down in the blog, or you can access them here.

Thomas Tournament in print

Be sure to check out my main story highlighting the local champions at the Thomas Subaru Tournament plus a notebook by Sam Shuss in Monday's Bedford Gazette.

I also talked to Chestnut Ridge's Tyler Dibert for a separate piece in the paper. Tyler broke the school record for career wins on Saturday.

Pick up a copy or subscribe online at www.bedfordgazette.com. Also keep it here and in the Gazette for the latest news and notes as we get set for the District Duals.

Buttry rolling toward the postseason

Austin Buttry's having a lot of fun this season.
An undefeated record so far has much to do with that. The Chestnut Ridge junior heavyweight sports a 20-0 record as the Lions prepare for a match at Conemaugh Township on Wednesday before the 27-team Thomas Tournament at Bedford on Friday and Saturday.
I had a chance to chat with Buttry after the conclusion of this past weekend's Mountaineer Duals, where Chestnut Ridge won the team title with a 5-0 mark. He assessed his season to date.
"It's been going great," he said. "I have great practice partners and everyone's pushing each other in the room. Everything's just falling into place, which is where I want it to be."
Last season, Buttry was behind Northern Bedford's Quinton Hixson on the pecking order of local heavyweights. Hixson finished his career with a second state medal, while Buttry came up a little short in his quest to get to Hershey.  He lost in the opening round at the Southwest Regional to Chartiers-Houston's Nate Grandelis, 4-3 in overtime, and then dropped a 3-2 consolation decision to Carlynton's Nik Sappie which ended his season. Grandelis went on to the regional final and then placed second in the state.
"It's never look back and just keep pushing on," he said of the mindset. "There's always going to be somebody better and you have to never stop working to be better than him."
Buttry, who shows great athleticism and mat intelligence, hones his wrestling on a calendar-to-calendar basis. Chestnut Ridge coach Greg Lazor has often said that Buttry's year-round work ethic in the sport gives him an advantage in the weight class where outsiders may view him as just an undersized heavyweight. After the high school season last year, Buttry finished as a placewinner at the NHSCA Nationals in Virginia Beach.
Currently, Buttry is ranked fifth in the state by both Off the Mat and PA Power Rankings.
There have been many comparisons in the past between football and wrestling and how the two sports complement each other, especially to those wrestlers in the higher weight classes. Buttry, a Bedford Gazette All-Star lineman this past fall, is another example of the benefit of that.
"I agree with that 100 percent," he said. "You're always battling in wrestling, and you're always battling in football. You can never stop, or you're going to basically get put to the ground or to the mat.
"I actually look forward to the third period sometimes, because being a smaller heavyweight, I try to use my conditioning because bigger guys tend to die out more, and then I can work my stuff to score points."
That point was exampled in his final bout on Saturday, when Buttry opened up a tight score in the third period and later pinned Centreville's Jason Park with one second remaining on the clock, part of the Lions 69-0 shutout of the Virginia team.
With the premier events of the season quickly approaching, that final weekend of the season remains the goal for Buttry in 2013.
"I just want to stay strong and keep moving forward. Hopefully, I can make it to Hershey and see what happens."

Chestnut Ridge's Austin Buttry maintains control of Centreville's Jason Park on Saturday at the Mountaineer Duals.

Weekend Rewind

Chestnut Ridge and Berlin thoroughly dominated the competition at the first Mountaineer Duals on Saturday, with the champion Lions outscoring five opponents 327-31, and Berlin totalling a margin of 330-51 in its five wins.
The two teams had previously agreed not to wrestle in a placement match after having wrestled in a dual meet on Thursday night. Ridge won that one, 43-19, which gave it the right to go for Saturday's team title, while Berlin settled for the third place match.
This is Sunday, which means my wrapup in the Gazette hasn't appeared yet, but please do so to review all the bout-by-bout results from Chestnut Ridge and HOPE for Hyndman, who went 1-4 to finish eighth.
Individually, the local highlight was Hornet senior Richard Moskey collecting his 100th career win, which I have also chronicalled for Monday's Gazette.

In other local action, Bedford beat Claysburg easily, and there weren't any real surprises to be by looking at the box score.
With the wrestling over for this weekend, it's time to look ahead to next weekend and the 25th annual Thomas Tournament at Bedford. One of the great local events is a little better this season with the additions of Meyersdale and South Fayette, both of whom have some outstanding individual talent.
Keep it here at Spring Into Sports and in the Gazette for information all week long. And on Friday, whether you plan on attending the event or not, I encourage all of you to pick up a copy of the Gazette for our annual preview. I won't divulge specifics on stories for the edition here, but I can tell you that as always, every former Thomas Tournament champion is named, every state placewinner that competed at the Thomas is listed, and each placewinner in all 14 weight classes last year is named on our comprehensive stats page.
You can also find tournament seedings and predictions from both myself and colleague Sam Shuss, who writes for me and is also the play-by-play voice for high school sports in Bedford County on Star 100.9 FM.

I haven't ironed out a full gameplan for the Thomas Tournament, but by the time Thursday's seeding meeting rolls around, I should have it figured out. I would like to live chat, though I am guessing right now that I will only do so in a limited capacity. I am also hoping to videotape several bouts, including wrestlers that are outside of my coverage area, and post them as soon as I can afterward. And I will be posting updated results here at Spring Into Sports.

Thursday rewind and a look ahead

An awesome environment and a lot of exciting bouts made Thursday's dual between Chestnut Ridge and Berlin a great one. On paper two days ago, I analyzed the match as a 6-5 split for the Lions with three tossup bouts. As we all know now, it ended up being a 10-4 overall split for Chestnut Ridge and a lopsided looking 43-19 score, though it was much closer than that inside the numbers. Here's a few things that I took away from this match:

— I had given Berlin the 113-pound advantage, and that proved to be completely opposite, as Chestnut Ridge freshman Blake Dunlap was very impressive in his 8-2 decision against Berlin junior Tommy DeArmitt. Dunlap wasn't part of the opening night lineup for the Lions, but he is quickly elevating himself into a wrestler to watch with a 5-0 record.

— I also gave the Mountaineers the edge at 195 with Stew Trulick against Chestnut Ridge's Brad Winegardner. Both had good records coming in, but I thought Trulick's edge was with a little more varsity experience. However, Winegardner came away with the 6-4 win thanks to a late takedown.

— I thought Chestnut Ridge's Derrick Claar would prevail at 126, though I had only given the Lions a slight advantage there. Berlin's E.J. Custer is a tough customer, but Claar proved to be much tougher as he dominated Custer before pinning him to close out the dual.

If you didn't know yet, I shot video of the bouts at 195 (Winegardner's win) and 220, where Chestnut Ridge's Dan Albright beat Berlin's Mitchell Walker in overtime. You can access those videos here.

It was a little late getting back to Bedford and putting together the paper, and I didn't have a a lot of time to go over the other matches of the night. But one bout that stuck out to me from Bedford's 57-19 win over North Star was the 220-pound bout, where Bedford's Chance Williams beat Levi Albright in the ultimate tiebreaker. Williams is a junior but hasn't had much of a chance, no pun intended, to crack the varsity lineup until this season. That said, he's quietly 11-5. Albright had won last month's Southmoreland Holiday Classic, beating another county wrestler in Northern Bedford's Eric Grace for that title. Grace beat Williams last week. With Williams added to the list of hopefuls at 220, this weight is certainly one to keep an eye on for the upcoming postseason.

On Saturday, the highlight event for the Bedford County locals is the Mountaineer Duals at Berlin, where it could have been expected to be a repeat of Chestnut Ridge vs. Berlin for the championship, provided each team would win its pool. However, as noted by Eric Knopsnyder in Knop's Knotes from 1-13, we will not see this if the pool rounds turn out as such. Chestnut Ridge, by virtue of its win last night over Berlin, would draw the championship match while Berlin would be relegated to the third place affair, as tournament organizers like in many other events do try to stay away from common opponents.

I do understand that for the pool rounds, but I can't buy it for the title match. Berlin goes unbeaten in its home duals and can only wrestle for third place because of a loss to Chestnut Ridge two days earlier, which myself, Eric, and other media on hand as well as fans of both sides can attest to that the match could have been very different had the Mountaineers caught a few more things in their favor.

Regardless, here are the pools for Saturday:
Pool A @ Berlin HS Gym - Archbishop Wood, Bellwood, Berlin, Centreville, VA, and Frankfort, WV
Pool B @ Berlin MS Gym - Chestnut Ridge, HOPE for Hyndman, Southern Huntingdon, West Shamokin, Osbourne Park, VA

The match schedule will be drawn up at weigh-ins. Wrestling is set to begin at 9 a.m. Also on Saturday is a dual meet with Bedford visiting Claysburg. Varsity only at 2 p.m.

Thursday's videos from Chestnut Ridge vs. Berlin

I shot video of the 195-pound and 220-pound bouts from Thursday's match. I do apologize in advance for not getting the scoreboard with bout score in the videos. I was sitting on the same side as it and literally had people on top of me, so the scoreboard you do see in the videos displays the team score and time. I picked up the 195 bout about 30 seconds into it.

Chestnut Ridge won both bouts, click on the links to watch them.

195 - Brad Winegardner defeats Stew Trulick, 6-4.

220 - Dan Albright defeats Mitchell Walker, 4-3 in overtime.

I will also note that I had a brain cramp in Friday's Gazette headline about the match. Ridge won 10 bouts, not nine as it says.

Ridge-Berlin prelude

About set to make my way to Berlin for tonight's matchup. I see that Eric Knopsnyder is expecting to try live blogging the match. I'll leave that up to him, but I hope to be also posting updates/coverage, plus I'm going to try getting some videos as well.

Chestnut Ridge at Berlin preview

Here is my preview of Thursday's big match with projected lineups and records. Tribune-Democrat editor Eric Knopsnyder, with the help of our wrestling friend Odoyel Rules, has also done a preview and that can be viewed here.

Chestnut Ridge at Berlin
Thursday, 7 p.m. at Berlin Brothersvalley High School

Team Records: Chestnut Ridge (12-1); Berlin (5-0)
State Rankings: Chestnut Ridge (2nd); Berlin (23rd)

Projected Lineups (Chestnut Ridge wrestlers listed first)
106 - Aaron Burkett (Fr., 11-2) vs. Emil Kiesnowski (Fr., 5-10)
113 - Blake Dunlap (Fr., 4-0) vs. Tommy DeArmitt (Jr., 9-7)
120 - Sam Shank (Jr., 9-6) vs. Joey Swank (Fr., 15-3)
126 - Derrick Claar (So., 14-2) vs. E.J. Custer (Jr., 13-4)
132 - Trent Crouse (So., 14-2) vs. Chris Miller (Sr., 17-1)
138 - Colby Hillegass (So., 10-6) vs. Braden Fochtman (Fr., 13-5)
145 - Jerimiah Zimmerman (Sr., 2-3) or Dustin Bence (Sr., 8-3) vs. Eric Darr (Sr., 9-8)
152 - Kyle Winegardner (Jr., 9-6) vs. Blake Miller (Sr. 13-6)
160 - Conner Buttry (Fr., 7-1) vs. Bryce Fochtman (So., 15-2)
170 - Bradie Bollman (Sr., 13-1) vs. Trevor Moore (So., 6-9)
182 - Tyler Dibert (Sr., 13-2) vs. Shane Pepper (So., 8-8)
195 - Brad Winegardner (Sr., 11-1) vs. Stew Trulick (Jr., 17-2)
220 - Dan Albright (Sr., 13-1) vs. Mitchell Walker (Sr., 10-4) or Anthony Collins (Fr., 3-1)
285 - Austin Buttry (Jr., 14-0) vs. Walker or Collins

Analysis: Straight up, I have this as a 6-5 split for Chestnut Ridge with three tossups. I give Chestnut Ridge the advantage at 106, 170, 182, 220, and 285, and a slight edge at 126. I have Berlin favored at 113, 120, 138, 160, and 195. The most intriguing bout is at 132 between Crouse and Miller. Miller won, 3-2, last year. The other tossups are at 145 and 152. Chestnut Ridge has a better opportunity to score more bonus points where it is heavily favored, thus Berlin will have to have 126 and maybe pull another upset to win.

Prediction: Chestnut Ridge 33-21.

This date in local wrestling history...

On January 15, 2002...
Bedford senior Eric Gibbons won his 100th career bout, by forfeit against Cambria Heights. Gibbons, who was a state finalist in 2001, became the seventh Bedford wrestler at the time to surpass the 100-win mark. He went on to set the then school record for wins with 122 and finished seventh in the state at 145 pounds.

Review and Preview

It was a solid ending to the past week with both of the big local matchups taking place inside Northern Bedford's gym. On Thursday, Chestnut Ridge kept showing why it is currently the best team in Bedford County with a 54-9 victory over Northern. The Lions won 11 bouts as a precursor to their 74-4 waxing of Central Cambria last night.
Also on Saturday, Bedford pulled away from Northern Bedford in the final weights to score a 44-27 win. The highlight bouts of this match were at the beginning and the end. Starting the match at 138, Bedford junior Toby Brett used a five-point move in the first period to defeat Northern Bedford senior Damian Corle, 6-2. After Bison stud Ryan Easter clinched the match victory for his side at 126, teammate Garrett Thomas went out at 132 and defeated Mason Replogle, 2-0. Thomas is wrestling as good as anyone at this point in the season. You can find a feature I did on Thomas further down in the blog.
I wasn't at Saturday's match, but I did shoot video of Replogle's 4-2 win over Chestnut Ridge's Trent Crouse on Thursday. You can watch the bout here.
Speaking of 132, how good is this weight right now? Thomas, Replogle, Crouse, Berlin's Chris Miller, and Meyersdale's Tanner Hetrick are all high-caliber wrestlers.

Looking ahead to this week, the highlight match is expected on Thursday as Chestnut Ridge travels to Berlin. As it could likely turn out, these two could see each other again in Saturday's Mountaineer Duals, where Ridge and Berlin appear to be the favorites in their pools, and the winners of each pool meet for the title.
HOPE for Hyndman is also scheduled for the Mountaineer Duals, and the Hornets are in the same pool with Chestnut Ridge. They did not wrestle this year as they usually do, and it is the only county team that Hyndman will match up with barring any potential District 5 Duals matches against Bedford, Ridge, or Northern Bedford.
One bout most people want to see there would be Chestnut Ridge's Dan Albright vs. HOPE for Hyndman's Jake Bennett. Both are ranked inside the top 15 in the state at 220 pounds. Albright had a solid 6-2 decision over Northern's Eric Grace on Thursday, and Bennett finished second at the Winner's Choice Tournament in West Virginia this weekend. He did compete at 195, but I am told that he will be wrestling Albright this coming Saturday.
Also on Thursday, Bedford hosts North Star in an important District 5 match.

The season is kicking into high gear with big events such as the Thomas Subaru Tournament and the district duals in both District 5 and 6 fast approaching. There has been one significant change to the District 6-AA bracket. Instead of taking the top 8 as in the past, the top 12 will be given spots this year. The top four seeds will be designated as hosts for the first round and receive byes, and will wrestle later that same night against those early winners. Here is the draw:
   At No. 1 seed - 8 vs 9, winner vs 1
   At No. 2 seed - 7 vs 10, winner vs 2
   At No. 3 seed - 6 vs 11, winner vs 3
   At No. 4 seed - 5 vs 12, winner vs 4
As usual, the semifinals and final will be at Tyrone. You can find the latest District 6 points standings here.
